Zoom: Selection for CAPA “Curves and Lines” competition

Selection for the CAPA “Curves and Lines” competition. Please submit up to two images no later than NOON Sunday, March 16th.

Send your images to BPSComp@outlook.com. To avoid problems with email software resizing the images, add them as attachments to the email rather than embedding them in the body of the message.

The themes for this competition are:

  • Geometry in Nature – images that capture interesting natural shapes and patterns like spirals, fractals waves, etc… This theme highlights the curve and repetitions found in the natural world or created within a photographic image.

  • Landscape – images capturing interesting architectural shapes, leading lines, patterns in rural or urban environments. This theme focuses on curves, geometry, and visual rhythm in man-made surroundings.

  • Minimal Still Life – simple, clean images of everyday objects arranged in repetitive patterns or positions to emphasize their curves and lines. This theme aims to find the curve and visual interest in mundane items.

  • Motion and Flow – image capturing the curves and created by moving elements such as people, animals, vehicles, water, smoke etc. This theme focuses on using curves to show movement and energy.

  • Kaleidoscope Curves – image featuring interesting reflective symmetry (where shape or pattern is reflected in a mirror line or a line of symmetry),or a kaleidoscopic effect. Images will showcase curves, lines, and geometric shapes found in modern architecture. Submissions can feature architectural details such as stairs, railings, windows, bridges, and other structural elements. Creative perspectives showcasing the artistry of modern architectural designs are encouraged.

Most editing techniques are permitted. NOT permitted are:

  • Elements with non-photographic origin

  • Frames, borders etc. They don't explicitly mention vignettes but I'd recommend not adding any that aren't naturally in the image.

  • AI techniques including in-painting (content-aware fill) and out-painting or generative imagery.

The usual size restrictions of 1400x1050 apply (that is, the image must meet one of those dimensions and not exceed either), and maximum file size is 1.8MB.

Please view the rules here.

Zoom: Guest Speaker - Chris Attrell

Tonight will have a presentation from Chris Attrell: Photographing Abandoned Structures.

Chris Attrell began his photographic journey in 1996 as a landscape and nature photographic hobbyist. His interest took a more localized turn in 2003 when he started to explore rural Alberta and Saskatchewan, seeking out symbols of the prairie past; grain elevators, ghost towns, and abandoned buildings.

Recognizing the historical significance of these pioneer relics Chris set out to photographically document Saskatchewan’s heritage. Over the last ten years Chris has built and run several successful online photo galleries to showcase both his and others’ images of the Prairie Provinces. His interests have expanded to include night photography, storm photography, and rural-themed portraits.

Chris’ love of the prairies prompted him to move from Banff, Alberta to Shaunavon, SK in 2006, where he currently lives with his wife.

He has 2 books published Forgotten Saskatchewan and Grain Elevators: Beacons on the Prairies.

In Person: Selection for BPS Print exhibition

BPS have been asked on fairly short notice to put on a Print Exhibition at the Shadbolt Centre from the 1st of February through the 6th of March, 2025. Framed and matted prints will be hung on the new wall that was built across the previous entrance to the old Encores Cafe, which has now been demolished as part of the renovations. There is space for 10 to 12 prints hung in two rows, one above the other.

To prepare for this we will have an evening devoted to selecting prints.

There is no restriction on subject matter for your prints (except they should be family-friendly), but keep in mind that one purpose of the exhibition is to show the community our best and most interesting works, and another is to attract new members. We encourage all members to submit their high-impact prints.

Please bring along up to 2 prints, matted in 16”x20” mats.

Note that 2 prints means no more than 2!

We will meet at Meeting room #1 in the Field House, Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West. Click here for the map.

In Person : Small-group sharing of photos (prints or via your personal digital devices)

This is going to be an informal meeting where we can bring anything in that we want to chat about with our fellow members. For example, you may want to bring in a print, a series of prints or maybe a few images on a mobile device. You could even bring in photographic equipment if you want. By making it smaller groups it will be a way to get feedback and discussion without an large audience.
