Selection for the CAPA “Minimalism” competition. Please submit up to two images no later than 5pm Sunday, May 3rd.
Send your images to BPSComp@outlook.com. To avoid problems with email software resizing the images, add them as attachments to the email rather than embedding them in the body of the message.
This competition has a very strict editing policies (please refer to the CAPA rules linked below for full details).
Submitted images must fall within one of the following themes:
Natural Minimalism – explores elements isolated against clean backgrounds, lone trees in vast landscapes, or simple weather elements that capture nature’s elegant simplicity
Architectural & Urban Minimalism – focuses on geometric shapes, clean lines, and the powerful use of negative space in human-created environments.
Most editing techniques are permitted including vignettes. NOT permitted are:
Elements with non-photographic origin
Frames, borders etc.
AI techniques including in-painting (content-aware fill) and out-painting or generative imagery. Please refer to the CAPA website for details on Permitted AI Tools vs. Prohibited AI Techniques, here.
The usual size restrictions of 1400x1050 apply (that is, the image must meet one of those dimensions and not exceed either), and maximum file size is 1.8MB.

Zoom: Selection for North Shore Challenge
The Burnaby Photographic Society enters the North Shore Challenge photography competition regularly. This competition is exciting because it's a great showcase for local talent and they always put on a fun presentation when they show us the results in March. We'd like you to contribute to our entry in the club category.
This selection meeting is to choose six of our members' photos to comprise our club's competition entry.
Please submit up to two photos to BPScomp@outlook.com no later than 5pm Sunday December 18th.
Image files must fit the usual specifications - .jpg files, maximum 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels tall, and must fill one of these dimensions. They're requesting people use the sRGB color space for consistent color reproduction.
It's open theme, meaning there are no pre-set subjects. However:
"AI" generated content is not allowed, including in-painting, out-painting and generative fill.
Disturbing or explicit adult content may be disqualified at the discretion of the judges. (We at BPS will also make judgements about this during the selection meeting.)
Images submitted to this competition in previous years are not eligible.
Note that if selected, your images may be used by the North Shore Photographic Society to promote their future competitions.

Gord Webster will talk about how to navigate CAPA's new competition rules. This is also going to be an informal meeting where we can bring anything in that we want to chat about with our fellow members. For example, you may want to bring in a print, a series of prints or maybe a few images on a mobile device. You could even bring in photographic equipment if you want. By making it smaller groups it will be a way to get feedback and discussion without an large audience.

We will have our Christmas party this year at the Greentree Village Community Centre (4295 Garden Grove Dr, Burnaby, BC).
It is pot luck so everyone should bring a favourite dish to share (and bring your own drink).

Zoom: Scavenger Hunt Results
Ron Jerome and Jen Dinh are organizing this year’s scavenger hunt. Images should include the photographer's name, title and category and should conform to the usual size requirements for projected images.
We also encourage members to take fresh images rather than digging through their treasure troves.
Please submit your images no later than midnight Saturday November 1st. Please see the email sent on October 20, 2025 at 12:51pm for submission details.
Jen and Ron will review and categorize them for this meeting and then Members will be asked to vote for their favourites this evening.
You may enter any or all of the theme categories. Submit your favourite images - one only- in each category:
Impressionism - capture how something felt in terms of light, colour, motion
Accidental Art - find beauty in randomness: spilled paint, rust, trash, shapes
Unexpected Juxtapositions - such as old vs new architecture, graffiti on a historic building
One Colour Rules All - photographic a scene dominated by a single colour
A Different Point of View - a unique angle or take on a particular subject
Something Funny - odd or laugh out loud
We have had fun with this before and look forward to some interesting shots.

This competition has a very strict editing policies (please refer to the CAPA rules linked below for full details).
A monochrome image must fall into one of these two categories:
A purely greyscale image using only black, white, and shades of grey
A greyscale image that has been uniformly tinted with a single colour across the entire frame (such as sepia, red, or gold toning)
An image is NOT considered monochrome if it:
Has selective colour toning in different areas
Includes spot colouring or partial colourization
Uses multiple tints or tones across different parts of the image
Such images that mix colours or toning effects are considered a monochrome and will be disqualified.
Submitted images must fall within one of the following themes:
Candid Person(s) – images that capture unscripted moments of subtle interactions, and spontaneous dramas of everyday human life – genuine moments found in street scenes, cultural gatherings, or daily activities rather than posed portraits or professional models.
Natural Surroundings – images that showcase the raw beauty and drama of our environment through weather phenomena, geological formations, cityscapes, landscapes, seascapes, and celestial events. Human elements may be included if they serve to enhance the scale or narrative of the natural scene.
Dramatic Contrast & Shadows – images where the interplay of light and shadow creates compelling visual narratives through low-key, silhouette, or selective lighting techniques. Image may include architectural elements, human forms, urban structures or natural subjects.
Nostalgia – images that transport viewers through time by capturing the weathered beauty of bygone eras, from abandoned places and vintage artifacts to creative composites that bridge past and present.

Note that even though this is a digital selection it will be an in person meeting.
Submitted images must fall within one of the following themes:
Botanical – only wild plants photographed in their natural environment are permitted in this theme such as: flowers, scrubs, bushes, trees, fungi and algae. Human created hybrid plants or “cultivated plants” are not permitted.
Cultivated plants - are ones that are planted and maintained by humans as opposed to emerging naturally in the environment. Wild flowers or plants grown in a botanical garden are accepted in this theme. In cases where a plant species is known to occur in the wild and has been cultivated by humans, the judging panel will give the image the “benefit-of-the-doubt” and accept the image as meeting the definition of this theme. “Hand-of-man” elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral part of the nature story, and should not exceed 10% of the image space. (The 10% image space area will be used as guide by the judges and is not a factor for disqualification.)
Insects, Reptiles & Amphibians – such as: alligators, ants, bees, beetles, butterflies, crickets, crocodiles, dragonflies, frogs, gecko, hornets, iguana, lizard, mantis, mosquitoes, snakes, turtles, wasps, etc… “Hand-of-man” elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral part of the nature story, and should not exceed 10% of the image space. (The 10% image space area will be used as guide by the judges and is not a factor for disqualification.)
Landscape – subjects such as weather phenomena, geological formations, landscapes, seascapes and natural phenomena, planets, stars and astronomical events. “Hand-of-man” elements shall not be present.
Nature – such as living animals (including arthropods, spiders and crustaceans), birds and marine subjects, which are living under the unobvious control and feeding of humans in situations such as zoos, game farms, animal reserves, and/or aquariums, etc. No domestic or feral animals/birds are permitted in this theme. Domestic and feral animals include, but are not limited to camels, cats, chickens, dogs, donkeys, goats, horses, rabbits, pigs, rock doves, sheep, starlings, and water buffalo.
“Hand-of-man” elements shall not be present in the Nature theme, except where those human elements are integral part of the nature story, and should not exceed 10% of the image space. (The 10% image space area will be used as guide by the judges and is not a factor for disqualification.)Wildlife –This theme is restricted to living and untamed wildlife mammals, birds and marine subjects ONLY. Wildlife subjects for this theme must be living free and cannot be living in traditional zoos, open-range zoos, game farms or other areas where they are under the care of man, restrained and/or confined.
For this theme, nature parks are considered natural environments because the animals are not in “controlled conditions“.
Wild animals and birds with scientific bands, tags or radio collars, are permitted in this theme, but those with tethers or harness attachments are not permitted. No domestic or feral animals/birds are permitted in this theme. Domestic and feral animals include, but are not limited to camels, cats, chickens, dogs, donkeys, goats, horses, rabbits, pigs, rock doves, sheep, starlings, and water buffalo.
No hand-of-man is permitted in the Wildlife theme.
Wildlife images can also be entered into the Nature theme.

We also encourage people to use this first meeting to find out more about our BPS colleagues by asking about their hobbies, volunteer activities, skills, past careers, etc. You might be surprised what you learn about their "other lives" beyond BPS!

In person: One-minute slide shows, as well as selection of 12 prints for the Bob Prittie Metrotown library
This is an opportunity to practice putting together a one minute slide show. The idea is to get your skills going ready for the McGillivray slide show in May.
After the 1-minute slide shows are done, we will choose prints for the Bob Prittie Library display. Bring to the meeting two matted prints with our usual outside dimensions of 16x20". Prints can be color, black-and-white, infrared, etc. As well, they should be single (NOT double mats) and should only have a thin cardboard backing (NOT foam core or other thick backing) because those thick items will not fit in our frames.

In-person print-selection meeting for Crescent Beach black-and-white print competition, as well as selection of 10 prints for London Drugs, Market Crossing
We will have a selection of the prints for the Crescent Beach black and white competition. Please bring up to TWO matted prints to the meeting (normal mat size of 16”x20“).
After selecting prints for Crescent Beach, we will choose photos for the London Drugs display. Bring to the meeting two matted prints. The display area is about 8 feet from where customers stand, so the prints need to have an impact from that distance. The print size (NOT mat size) should be either 11x14" or 12x18". Prints can be in color, black-and-white, infrared, etc. If you wish, you can choose that night to include any of your Crescent Beach black-and-white photos for consideration for London Drugs.
