Zoom: Selection for CAPA Monochrome competition

Selection for the CAPA “Monochrome” competition. Please submit up to two images no later than NOON Saturday, October 25th.

Send your images to BPSComp@outlook.com. To avoid problems with email software resizing the images, add them as attachments to the email rather than embedding them in the body of the message.

This competition has a very strict editing policies (please refer to the CAPA rules linked below for full details).

A monochrome image must fall into one of these two categories:

  1. A purely greyscale image using only black, white, and shades of grey

  2. A greyscale image that has been uniformly tinted with a single colour across the entire frame (such as sepia, red, or gold toning)

An image is NOT considered monochrome if it:

  • Has selective colour toning in different areas

  • Includes spot colouring or partial colourization

  • Uses multiple tints or tones across different parts of the image

Such images that mix colours or toning effects are considered a monochrome and will be disqualified.

Submitted images must fall within one of the following themes:

  • Candid Person(s) – images that capture unscripted moments of subtle interactions, and spontaneous dramas of everyday human life – genuine moments found in street scenes, cultural gatherings, or daily activities rather than posed portraits or professional models.

  • Natural Surroundings – images that showcase the raw beauty and drama of our environment through weather phenomena, geological formations, cityscapes, landscapes, seascapes, and celestial events. Human elements may be included if they serve to enhance the scale or narrative of the natural scene.

  • Dramatic Contrast & Shadows – images where the interplay of light and shadow creates compelling visual narratives through low-key, silhouette, or selective lighting techniques. Image may include architectural elements, human forms, urban structures or natural subjects.

  • Nostalgia – images that transport viewers through time by capturing the weathered beauty of bygone eras, from abandoned places and vintage artifacts to creative composites that bridge past and present.

Most editing techniques are permitted. NOT permitted are:

  • Elements with non-photographic origin

  • Frames, borders etc. They don't explicitly mention vignettes but I'd recommend not adding any that aren't naturally in the image.

  • AI techniques including in-painting (content-aware fill) and out-painting or generative imagery.

The usual size restrictions of 1400x1050 apply (that is, the image must meet one of those dimensions and not exceed either), and maximum file size is 1.8MB.

Please view the rules here.
